Darwin Award Nominee [Sep. 22nd, 2005|12:51 pm]
Wizard of Changes -- ©cdozo 2004 to 2015
This guy may well qualify for a Darwin Award in the near future. He's
talking on a cell phone while filling a 55 gallon drum with gas. And
the drum is sitting ungrounded in the bed of his
pick-up truck.

Darwin award?

Why? There has never been a substantiated report of a cell phone sparking a fire. Although there are warnings at gas stations about their use, it's generally perceived to be another one of those things where the possibility may exist of danger but no one who has tried has managed to succeed in sparking a fire with a cell phone. [Including Mythbursters - although I haven't actually seen that segment and only heard about it second-hand.]

Re: Darwin award?

I'm more concerned that he's filling the barrel while it's in the bed of his truck. That is a proven hazard due to sparks caused by static build-up. I've seen two videos of people getting crispied because they didn't put the container on the ground. In this case, I know it'd be hard for the guy to move the filled barrel up into the bed of the truck. But it would be harder on the guy if the barrel ignited. It would be pretty icky. And it's not what the Houston Area Fire Department needs to be dealing with right now.

Re: Darwin award?

Isn't that more of a problem if they have a plastic truck liner? From the photo, it doesn't look like he has one.

Not that I don't agree that cans should be filled on the ground... I just suspect that this one's beyond his ability to lift. Hazard, yes; Darwin Award, I don't think so. There's too many better ones out there.

I am more concerned about all the naive folks who start fueling their cars and then GET BACK INTO THEIR CAR. They then get out of their car and touch the nozzle without first touching something metal (like the side of their car).
