In spite of curculio 's post, I almost forgot to vote. Teh intarwebz says that the polls are open until 7pm. So I'm off to vote on Constitutional Amendments such as:

"The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to provide that the maximum appraised value of a residence homestead for ad valorem taxation is limited to the lesser of the most recent market value of the residence homestead as determined by the appraisal entity or 110 percent, or a greater percentage, of the appraised value of the residence homestead for the preceding tax year."

Yeah, I just voted, too, and to be honest I voted against the amendment giving $5B to cancer research out of state funds. I used to manage government research grants -- before I approve something like this, I want to see an oversite committee, the names of committee members, who's getting the money, how they're using it, who can apply to get the money, submission guidelines, yadda yadda yadda, because otherwise it sounds like a massive boondoggle perpetrated under the aegis of "cancer research."

I voted against it too. It was just to undefined.

cancer research

The greatest reduction in mortality of most, if not all cancers has been due to refined methods for early detection. If we are going to spend money, detection should be a priority. I agree boondoggles, that is unspecified slush funds should be avoided at all costs.

What confuses me is the part comparing the lesser of 'recent market value' or 110% or GREATER percentage. What greater percentage, 300%? It sounds like there is no maximum appraised value at all!

The Legislator May Act Dumb, But...

That's the problem.

No, they are great at obfuscation. What a wonderful word! It sounds exactly like it means.
