I call these critters Jumblebugs. But it turns out that they actually are lacewing larva that have camouflaged themselves with debris. Look closely at the top photo and you can see its legs.

Are those the bugs that put their eggs on those eyelashy stalks? This is yet another wonderful and enlightening photo. Excellent.

I'm impressed with you and the bugs

I bet Lacewings were invented by a Japanese person or intelligent designer. Totally elegant, aesthetic beyond any necessity, and very very cool with a little hyper-dry wit mixed in.

Re: I'm impressed with you and the bugs

I bet they let one of their kids, a "lesser intelligent designer so to speak," designed the jumblebug.

I'm pointing to a "bump" on the tree. The "bump" is the bug.

Great photo

In austin one of the most common trash items for these guys are dead fire ants. I wanted to do an experiment to see whether they preferred covering themselves with potential warning smells or if the carcasses were any more effective in keeping the larvae safe. Maybe when I get back.

I am jealous. I want to get a 35 Rebel!
