In addition to roughing up Houston and trashing Galveston pretty badly, Hurricane Ike did a huge amount of damage to a place in Texas called Bolivar PeninsulaThe USGS (US Geological Survey) has posted a set of before and after photos of the area. Here's one of them:

Did you know that in this case (TX), Bolivar is pronounced Bolliver? Rhymes with Oliver. Also, these pictures don't make sense. Where the big waves are, the houses are fine. Then when there are no waves, it's a big mess. I say it's all propaganda and photoshopaganda. Really, though, I would very much like to know who built the houses that withstood the storm. Have you seen that one with the completely intact yellow house surrounded by utter destruction and rubble? Either the storm was bouncing, or someone knew how to build a house.

Pretty impressive from far away. I'm sure it looks that much worse if you were a insurance adjuster.
