From his obituary in today's New York Times -- "Benoit B. Mandelbrot, a maverick mathematician who developed an innovative theory of roughness and applied it to physics, biology, finance and many other fields, died on Thursday in Cambridge, Mass. He was 85."

I love it when people write pop songs about real people who've done cool stuff. Check out this one about Mandelbrot and his creation:

What a great name for such a phenomena as the fractal. I have always synonomized the two. His books were sheer genius. He will be missed.
