I called the TV station that had the article about the two hikers in South Carolina, one of whom was killed and one of whom is still missing after they dialed 9-1-1 from their cell phone. I told a woman at the news desk about the Verizon 9-1-1 audible alarm. She seemed quite interested.

I don't know if I'd rather the phone in question had a 9-1-1 alarm or not. If it did, I'd feel bad I haven't managed to get Verizon to disable the alarms yet. If it didn't, I'll feel disappointed because it would have provided such a strong example of why the alarm is bad.

Overall I just feel bad for the people involved.

I think we all feel bad that a couple still enjoying hiking in their 80s were killed (and one still missing, but I'd bet on dead)...but if part of the cause was the alarm on the phone, their pain plus your attempt to publicize the problem may be the trigger that gets all the alarms turned off. In which case, while you couldn't save *them*, your actions may well have saved others.

I hope you find out, one way or the other.

The feeling that I should be able to fix things right away, before any more bad happens, is why I rarely set out to Save The World. It can be depressing even when I succeed.

Well...it's your choice whether to focus on what you didn't accomplish, or what you did. I hope you choose the latter....you have done a good thing, and you started doing it when you first learned about it. You didn't wait.

The urgency helps me stay focused and on task. I would never have done the TV piece if it wasn't for the thought that people will die from this so I need to stop it Now. I hate doing public stuff. If I didn't feel getting to my goal was urgent, I'd probably go too slow and never get it done.

There's an up side (I stay on task) and a down side (I feel guilty I can't "fix" it faster).
