I doubt I would be so calm. Creepy story. I know it's important to push back against this expansion of presumed power, and I hope I would be brave and think fast enough to go through it as this guy apparently did. But I think slowly and I know that when I feel threatened in an animal way I go into some less-than-rational mode. (On 9/11 what I was scrambling to get the kids from school I brought the house telephone with me in the car. The weird thing is that it rang, but no one was there.)So I'd probably be a blithering over-compliant ninny.
