I Spy An Eye In The Sky [Jul. 31st, 2009|11:28 am]

[The river is |confused curious]

Day before yesterday I saw an AWAC flying over Austin. It had a visible trail gray/black exhaust smoke coming from its engines and it was flying west of MoPac near Camp Mabry. It was flying fairly low, it looked like it could have taken off from Austin-Bergstrom Airport, flown north and then was in the process of circling back south.

I haven't seen one of them in years. I didn't know that style was even in use anymore. I wonder what it was up to.

Was it actually turning when you saw it? And heading which direction? Could've been associated with the Texas Air National Guard, on a training flight, though I don't know what TANG's organization is these days.

But yeah, AWACs are still around and still in daily use in the Middle East theaters. Very handy they are.

I believe they're sometimes used when the Shuttle's being flown somewhere, too, as extra insurance for no traffic problems (the Shuttle's baby carriage isn't exactly nimble in the air...) in addition to surface air control. But that's a vague memory of someone saying that, and it may be totally wrong. If I were running things, I'd put up an AWACs in several interesting situations...

I'm pretty sure it was turning from flying west to flying south. I didn't see it for very long and I was in thick MoPac traffic, so I was concentrating more on driving than looking. But it appeared to be turning.

I thought of the Shuttle, but it landed today. Perhaps the AWAC was getting in position, but where did it come from and why was it so low?

I wondered if they weren't testing some equipment at Camp Mabry or testing to see if the AWAC could sense some certain electronic equipment.

Whatever it was up to, it was interesting to see it. It brought back memories of my dad telling me about AWAC's long ago and how excited we were when we actually saw one.

Maybe it was because of the laguardia thing?

Not unless they had advance notice. I saw the AWAC a few days before that happened.
