My Most Frequent Nightmare [Apr. 23rd, 2010|04:51 pm]

[The frogs are singing |Sukiyaki playing in my head]

Around this time of year I start having nightmares about Landrush (setting up camp at Kerrville). Part of the unease is that in my dreams Landrush is not at the ranch so I'm not sure where to set up camp.

I had my first Landrush nightmare for this year last night. I couldn't figure out where to park my trailer (FYI, IRL I'm not bringing the trailer). I had it in what was probably a legit spot, but the person I left in charge of it while I went to make sure it was OK to park it there moved it and I had to yell at him to put it back in a hurry. In addition, I left someone to watch Moco Verde's spot but he wandered off while I was trying to find someone to ask about parking the trailer and other people set up a bunch of living room furniture there so I lost our spot.

Can you tell that I hate Landrush.

Here's a video I made at the end of Landrush last year:

TMI About Landrush

Landrush is the weekend before Kerrville starts. Vehicles begin lining up in the parking meadow on Friday and people set up camp by their vehicles. They stay until Sunday when the gates open and you can go in and set up camp. It used to be you could go out way before the festival, set up camp and work for the ranch until the festival started. I used to love doing that. But then lots of freeloaders started coming and camping and eating free staff food but not working. So Vaughn, the power-hungry control-freak who was running the festival back then, invented Landrush. For a number of years, if you weren't at the front of the line your camp could miss getting its traditional spot. Now there is support for camps getting their traditional camping areas, but there can still be arguments as people are coming in. Even though my campmates are totally capable of getting our spot, I worry and feel that it's my responsibility. So I go almost every year. I have to admit that, except for the stress of getting the spot, Landrush is really fun. But the worry and the nightmares are a drag.

Here's me and G riding into the campground in our campmate Jack's pick-up. The camper he's towing used to belong to my late best friend Toby. It's the same make as the one on my truck (see icon).
