My friend Claire posted a link to this video on her facebook page.

I wonder if you watched the huge flock of birds that sit by the roads in Austin in the fall and winter, if they would make the amazing shapes these birds make. I think I'm going to try and find a spot where I can sit and watch.

In the meantime I recommend watching this video all the way through.

Wow. I did see some very large flocks of (I think) grackles yesterday afternoon driving into Austin--around Pflugerville, I think they were. Anyway, big, flowing flocks like this (not THIS big, but big) and flattening and balling. Since the falcons are migrating north at this time, I suspect they were being hunted by the falcons that hunt birds in winter in Austin and points south. I've seen merlins (smaller than peregrines, bigger than kestrels) playing with pigeon flocks near Lamar & 183 (and other places, including downtown.) Sometimes they're hunting and sometimes it seems they just like herding the other birds, the way an idle cowhorse will herd cattle or other horses in and out of pens.
