Like a Caddy, Only Different [Jan. 15th, 2011|09:20 am]

The word of the day is "ghillie"(also spelled gillie). Ghillie, according to Wikipedia, "is a Scots term that refers to a man or a boy who acts as an attendant on a fishing, fly fishing, hunting, or deer stalking expedition, primarily in the Highlands or on a river such as the River Spey."

In the old days, there was a special ghillie whose job it was to carry the master across streams. These ghillies were called, ghillie-weetfit. This eventually evolved into a derogatory term for the attendants of a Highland chief.

You can real more about ghillies on Wikipedia's gillie page.

My search was inspired by a BBC article about flyfishing which includes a photo with the caption, "Ghillies have been asked not to keep anything they catch to conserve stocks."

Which made me think, "Ghillie, what's a ghillie?"

Google shows that to be "gillyweed." I bet the root for that is from gill.

I'm impressed that you can remember little details like that.

That's where I first heard the word and I've been slightly obsessed ever since.

I know but you can't because if you had one you'd have to have a lot of them because they make them specially to blend in with certain places at certain times of year. I think you should make them yourself. It would be a great DIY project. Good reason to save scraps of burlap and old used up mops and any bits of string and straw you see blowing around... (I'm being evil. Sorry.)
